My team and I have been receiving many inquiries about the work being done on Herzberg Road between Legget Drive and Carling Avenue, the Herzberg Sewer Trunk Project.
The majority of this project is currently happening outside of public view, so I can understand why it is frustrating to see no work being done in one location. It is however a major investment in our community’s much needed and valued infrastructure. To give you more detail, the scope of the project involves the construction of a new trunk sanitary sewer that runs from the March Road Pumping Station (located on Legget Drive), down Herzberg Road, crosses over Carling Avenue and then runs on an alignment parallel to the rail tracks until it is reconnected to an existing trunk sanitary sewer.
Please note the upcoming road closure:
Carling Avenue between Herzberg Road and Moodie Drive will be closed from Sept. 13th at 7 p.m. until Sept. 16th at 6 a.m. to construct the sanitary crossing as part of this trunk sewer project. Detours and hard surfaces for pedestrians and cyclists will be implemented. Paving operations on Carling Ave will be completed during off peak hours on the Monday following this closure.
Following this, some minor tie in work and installation of a manhole on Herzberg Road just North of Carling Avenue will occur. This work will roughly take a week to complete and be the only work on Herzberg Road this year (projected at this time).
The contractor will complete the pump station modification in the Winter 2020. Then the installation of the new trunk sewer on Legget Drive and Herzberg Road will commence in the Spring of 2020. This work is planned to be completed by late Summer 2020.
The roadway reinstatement is scheduled for Fall 2020 after the trunk sewer has been constructed. If all goes to plan, this work will be completed by mid-late Fall 2020.
In general, roadway impacts on Herzberg Road will remain minimal until Spring 2020, however, the existing condition of the roadway on Herzberg Road will also remain until work starts in the Spring of 2020.
How will cyclists be impacted?
During construction on Herzberg Road, “Shared Use Lane Single File” signs will be installed along northbound and southbound Herzberg Road at all times. Also, an alternative signed cycling detour route will be implemented along Legget Drive, Schneider Road, and Carling Avenue for both the northbound and southbound cycling lanes along Herzberg Road at all times during construction impacting the cycle lanes.
To address concerns about construction debris, contractors will regularly be sweeping Herzberg Road and Carling Avenue to keep the roads as clean as possible for cyclists.
