It is hard to believe that it has been two years since I was sworn in as City Councillor for Kanata North. I have cherished this experience and consider myself very fortunate to have the opportunity.
Over these last two years, in addition to my responsibilities to my community, I have also had a number of Committee roles including Chairing the Community and Protective Services Committee. Over this last year, despite the pandemic, we have made great strides to improve the quality of life for all residents. This year alone, Council approved our recommendations for:
- A new framework for the Community Funding program to better address the greatest needs and emerging issues in our community.
- An updated 10-year plan for housing and homelessness with ambitious targets to create 5,700 to 8,500 affordable housing units and subsidies and to eliminate unsheltered, veteran and chronic homelessness by 2030.
- A new Rental Housing Property Management By-law and updates to the Property Standards By-law to improve the safety and quality of rental housing.
- Six priorities for our future Community Safety and Well-Being Plan to address the root causes of crime, social disorder, and ill health.
I would like to thank staff and the Committee for their hard work on these projects, accomplished on top of the city’s efforts to respond to the pandemic in our community.
I would also like to highlight the work of the city’s Human Needs Task Force, which brought together our partners to improve food security, support residents experiencing homelessness, and coordinate outreach and social services. Thanks to this continued collaboration, we have been able to respond to emerging needs and take care of our most vulnerable residents.
It has been a very busy two years, and I am very proud of what we have accomplished as a Committee.
After much reflection, I have submitted my resignation as the Committee Chair to be able to pursue other leadership opportunities in my capacity as City Councillor. I hope to have the opportunity to lean on my experience and education in economic development to assist our city, my community and our businesses in their recovery efforts from COVID-19.
It has been an honour to Chair the important work of this Committee and to work with such dedicated teams across our city. I am thankful for the opportunity, and I look forward to new challenges that allow me to serve our community .
