Community Voice Column – April 26, 2019

It’s been a busy few weeks! Many thanks to everyone who attended my public meetings – in person and via Facebook Live – to discuss Minto’s new development at Sandhill Drive, the development including gas station at 471 Terry Fox Road as well as the March Road Expansion lands developments by Claridge and Minto. If you haven’t done so yet, please share your feedback. Details on all developments in our community can be found on my website at KanataNorth.ca/Development.

I also held a public meeting to discuss Francophone Programming in Kanata North. A Steering Committee has been set up, which will be meeting quarterly. Please email me at Jenna.Sudds@ottawa.ca if you are interested in joining.

Rogers is proposing a 40m antenna system at 830 March Road behind the shopping complex. Please share any questions or concerns you may have with Daryl Rancourt at drancourt@rogers.com or 613-983-6456 by May 18th.

Springtime means that traffic calming measures are being implemented in our community. It unfortunately also means that mosquito season is upon us. We are now entering the fourth year of the Kanata North Nuisance Mosquito Control Program. Larva surveillance has started, and we have received first reports of instar larvae in our wetlands, which means that treatment – ground and aerial – has begun.

It’s been a pleasure to participate in the Kanata Girl Guides Spring Tea & Bazaar and to attend the Seniors Council fundraiser as well as the Kanata Rotary 20th anniversary celebrations. Many thanks to everyone involved!

We also celebrated the Grand Opening of the new uOttawa campus in the Kanata North Tech Park. I am very excited to see this happening and believe it will serve to ensure better connections between our young talent, researchers and our thriving technology community.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out with their concerns regarding the Kanata North hydro corridor vegetation management undertaken by Hydro One. I have shared these concerns directly with Hydro One and they have stopped all consultation and work. I will share updates as I have them for next steps. If you are impacted, please reach out at Jenna.Sudds@ottawa.ca so that I can keep you informed directly.

Exciting news! Approval of funding to upgrade two parks in Kanata North has been secured: Allenby and Morgan’s Grant Woods. Construction is already underway at Allenby Park. I will monitor progress and will provide updates as they become available. In mid-May, construction will also begin for the new Devonian Park in Richardson Ridge.

I encourage you all to check out the new Beaverbrook Digitization Lab to digitize old family photos, slides and negatives or preserve old home movies. You can find the Digitization Lab upstairs at the Beaverbrook branch, and the equipment can be prebooked online via the Ottawa Public Library website.
