Community Voice Column – February 11, 2020

Many thanks to all who have tuned into my Virtual Community Meetings and stop by my Councillor Chats. I always enjoy hearing from our Kanata North residents and meeting new people in our community. You can watch my Virtual Community Meetings online on my website. The next one is happening February 20th.

I am excited to be hosting my second annual International Women’s Day breakfast on March 5th featuring a panel of five local successful women. I am also inviting young women from our community to meet inspiring female leaders to learn from their experience. Young women can apply for this mentorship opportunity on my website at KanataNorth.ca/IWD.

I am thrilled that the Campeau Drive extension construction is underway. To mark the start, I joined Mayor Watson and fellow Councillors Gower and Leiper for a groundbreaking event. This much-needed connection will include a bridge over the Carp River and four lanes with segregated bike paths. Completion is scheduled for fall of 2021.
Congratulations to the Kanata Greenspace Protection Coalition on their successful ForeverGreen Gala. Our community showing up in large numbers clearly demonstrates that we oppose this development. The court date to discuss ClubLink’s contractual obligations is on February 27 and 28. I hope you will all join me at the Ottawa Courthouse on Elgin Street.

Many thanks to all of those who participated in the vote for the future of the Kanata North Mosquito Program. We had a fantastic turnout with close to double participation over last time. The results showed 78% of households support the program for the next four years. I will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.

Happy to share that more one-sided parking restrictions have been implemented for the winter. Boundstone Way and all the streets adjacent to William’s Court are the newest additions to have the signs installed. Many thanks to all who continue to share feedback.

Since we still have a few weeks of wintery weather ahead of us, I’d like to remind residents of the city’s winter maintenance standards. Snow removal is based on a priority system with major roads cleared first, followed by local roads and sidewalks. If you are able, please clear snow off fire hydrants and catch basins close to your property. Should you have snow removal concerns you can create a service request by calling 311 or online at Ottawa.ca.

It is an honour to co-chair the Seniors Roundtable with Mayor Watson and to be appointed to the Hydro Ottawa Board of Directors. I look forward to working with both these groups in the coming months.
