Community Voice Column – March 9, 2020

With the arrival of COVID-19 to our city, it is normal for the community to be anxious. Ottawa Public Health continues to work closely with local hospitals, health care partners, the Ministry of Health, Public Health Ontario and national partners to monitor and detect any cases of COVID-19 in the community. I encourage you to visit ottawapublichealth.ca for updates or reach out directly to Ottawa Public Health at 613-580-6744. As we deal with this virus, I encourage you to wash your hands thoroughly on a regular basis to limit the spread.

Recently, ClubLink and their partners Richcraft and Minto have submitted an appeal to the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal regarding their application to build on the golf course. I am very disappointed they chose to take this step, particularly in light of the over 250 technical issues outstanding on their plans. I will continue to provide updates as I have them and share important dates as they are confirmed.

I truly believe in the importance of mentoring the next generation of leaders. We have an obligation to ensure the younger generations are encouraged to dream big. This year, to celebrate International Women’s Day, I hosted my second annual International Women’s Day Breakfast featuring women-led businesses, 5 inspiring women panelists, and a mentorship opportunity for local young females. I look forward to seeing the growth throughout the years. Many thanks to all who participated.

For the second year in a row, I participated in the 2020 Transit Week Challenge to gain a better understanding of challenges many face daily. I do take transit regularly and understand the frustrations of unreliability. You can read my experiences on my website as well as a letter I shared with the General Manager of OC Transpo regarding the issues we need resolved to improve service.

After the numerous issues the LRT has faced over the last six months since launching, City Council unanimously decided to issue a Notice of Default to Rideau Transit Group (RTG). This is a contractual notice advising RTG that they are not fulfilling obligations under its contract with the city. RTG must now produce a plan to improve the issues to ensure that there is no interruption in service.

Many thanks to all who joined me for Greenspace Appreciation Day and the Family Day Skate hosted by MP McCrimmon and me. Always happy to meet more Kanata North residents!
